Grass Paver Moulds Gain Traction in Overseas Markets as Green Infrastructure Demand Rises

QUANZHOU, China – As global infrastructure priorities shift toward permeable, eco-friendly solutions, one product is quietly gaining ground: the grass paver mould. And for Fujian Unik Mould Technology Co., Ltd., a specialised manufacturer based in Quanzhou since 2010, this trend is translating into a steady stream of overseas orders.

Grass paver moulds are used to cast concrete grids that allow grass to grow through the openings. These pavers are increasingly specified for parking lots, emergency access roads, slope protection, and residential driveways where stormwater management and green cover are required. Unlike traditional impervious paving, grass pavers reduce runoff, lower heat buildup, and maintain load-bearing capacity.

According to Unik’s export records, demand for grass paver moulds has grown noticeably over the past 18 months, particularly from buyers in Australia, the UK, Nigeria, and Chile. “We are seeing more enquiries for permeable paving solutions,” said a company spokesperson. “Many of these customers previously bought standard paving moulds. Now they are specifically asking for grass paver designs with larger void ratios and smoother cavity finishes.”

The company produces grass paver moulds in 2 to 20 cavities, using Q235 base plates and 45# or Cr12 Mov steel for cavity inserts. Chrome plating is offered as an option for customers who need more than 150,000 blocks per mould. Common designs include the “figure-eight” shape, honeycomb grids, and rectangular lattice patterns – all engineered with a 1–2 degree taper to prevent block sticking during demoulding.

One recent shipment to Lagos, Nigeria, included 12 sets of 16-cavity grass paver moulds for an automated block plant. Another order from Melbourne, Australia, specified 6-cavity moulds with wood-grain texture on the solid borders of the grass paver. In both cases, the buyers cited municipal green building codes as the driver for switching from conventional pavers.

Beyond the moulds themselves, Unik provides sampling before bulk production – casting sample blocks from a single-cavity mould and shipping photos to the buyer for approval. Rust protection for sea freight follows a documented process: heat drying, heavy-duty oil, VCI film, and industrial shrink wrap. Every mould is dry-assembled and test-photographed before leaving the Quanzhou factory.

The market for grass paver moulds is expected to grow further as more cities adopt low-impact development (LID) standards and stormwater retention requirements. For manufacturers of concrete blocks, adding a grass paver line requires only a new mould – not a new machine – making it a low-risk entry into the green infrastructure segment.
